The Canberra office has a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Associate looking to join our dynamic and innovative corporate and commercial team that forms part of our Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) group.
Why work with us?
As a leading international law firm headquartered in Asia and recognised as one of the world’s most innovative law firms, King & Wood Mallesons offers a different perspective to commercial thinking and the client experience. With access to a global platform, a team of over 2000 lawyers in 27 locations around the world, we work with clients to help them understand local challenges, navigate through regional complexity, and to find commercial solutions that deliver a competitive advantage for our clients.
What sets us apart?
KWM Canberra is not your average Canberra law firm. We are Canberra’s first law firm (1927) and are among the three largest commercial law firms in Canberra. We are strongly connected to the national firm, playing a leadership role in the national government strategy and managing substantial matters for ASX 50 clients. Our lawyers get exposure to significant matters for both Commonwealth clients and major corporates; this mix of government and major corporate work is unique in the Canberra market. We also have strong ties to the local community particularly in supporting the ACT innovation ecosystem.
This role is part of our M&A group where the focus is on undertaking corporate and commercial advisory work for a broad range of clients. The role of a Senior Associate in the team includes working on major projects (including procurements and technology projects) and corporate transactions (including government asset sales, IP commercialisation, outsourcings and joint ventures).
About the team
The team has strong leadership from Partners from across the M&A team who work together to expose you to good, challenging work. As a senior member of the team you will have the ability to drive forward matters with minimal supervision, as well as support and mentor lawyers more junior then yourself. You will have access to other legal experts across the firm and work collaboratively with lawyers across different locations and practice areas deepening your own legal expertise.
You will have an opportunity to participate in social and sporting activities across the office, and support the community via our King & Wood Mallesons in the Community volunteer and pro-bono initiatives.
What would you bring to the team?
Of course you will have first rate written and oral communication skills, strong drafting experience, top notch legal analysis and an ability to get across complex areas of law quickly, but what’s most important to us is that you have a passion for commercial law and serving clients. You will also have a strong interest in and understanding of industry sectors in which we operate. Public sector experience, gained through closely working with government clients or working within government for a period of time is highly valued.
You will be self-aware, positive and have the ability to work well with others; being able to collaborate and work in a team is critical to success at KWM. In this ever changing legal and commercial landscape, you will also thrive in a culture that embraces change.
You will be the centre of information for clients and transform the client experience by truly engaging in and fostering those relationships to deliver relevant, prompt and commercially astute advice. We want people who build a culture of commitment to achieve the best results for our clients and our people by being innovative and being experts in their field.
